Growing your WHY

Spring has a way of inviting us to begin again.

Many of us plant something this time of year: on a balcony, in a garden, or simply on a windowsill. We look forward to the moment when something small and fragile turns into something alive and visible.

But planting is no guarantee.

Whether something grows depends on many things:the soilthe lightthe weatherand the care it receives along the way

And as I reflected on this, I realized how similar this is to how we grow ourselves.

Growth is not just in our control

When we begin to evolve — step into a new version of ourselves — it can feel just like planting something new.

We carry an idea, a hope, a sense of who we might become.

But whether that “new version” takes root depends on more than just intention:

  • Will our environment support it?

  • Do we recognize the conditions we are in?

  • Do we know how to care for it when things get difficult?

Some things are within our control. Many are not.

The story we tell ourselves shapes who we become

One of the most powerful factors in our growth is something less visible:

the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

Our identity is not fixed. It is something we continuously shape: through the way we interpret our past, understand our present, and imagine our future.

We are constantly connecting the dots:

  • who we used to be

  • who we are now

  • who we might become

And in doing so, we create meaning.

Sometimes we look back with pride:Look how far I’ve come.

Sometimes with criticism:I’m not where I thought I’d be.

Both perspectives are part of the same story.

Perhaps the most helpful place is somewhere in between:acknowledging growth — while staying open to what is still unfolding.

Living forward, understanding backward

The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once said:

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

We live our lives looking ahead. But we understand ourselves by looking back.

And the way we connect those experiences — the narrative we build — shapes how we see ourselves today.

So how do you grow your WHY?

If your life is something you are cultivating, then your story is the thread that holds it together.

Here are a few questions you might explore:

✨ What story am I currently telling myself about who I am?

✨ Does this story support who I want to become — or limit me?

✨ Where can I choose a more empowering perspective on my journey?

Because just like a plant, your growth is not only about what is happening around you.

It’s also about how you make sense of it.

A final thought

You cannot control every condition. But you can influence how you nurture what is growing within you.

And sometimes, that begins with choosing a different story.
